Alpine Skiing

Alpine Skiing

The feeling of being in a race course is unforgettable. Many people are cheering you on but you don’t hear them. You are only focused on the race course.

Alpine skiing is a type of skiing where many people compete in a ski race. Usually in an alpine skiing race each person would take two runs. The lowest combined time for the two runs wins. There are four events of alpine skiing. Slalom, Giant slalom, Super giant slalom, and downhill. Slalom turns are the shortest turns and downhill turns are the longest turns.

Alpine skiing evolved in the late 19th century and early 20th century in the Alps. The Alps are a mountainous region located in central Europe. In the earlier parts of alpine skiing there were only speed events such as downhill and Super giant slalom.

People from around the world compete in the olympic games for alpine skiing. Some popular countries for alpine skiing are, the US, Sweden, Austria, France and many more. The winter olympic games are in cold places and many countries come to compete.

The first alpine skiing event that was in the Olympic Games was the men's combined. In the combined, there is one downhill run and one slalom run. Women's events did not get added to the olympics until the 1950’s.

Those are some cool facts about Alpine skiing that you may not have known.

  2. I've always thought that Alpine skiing is a fun event to watch during the Olympics, but I never understood it that well. Thanks to your post, I understand it a lot better now! It seems really fun, but I think I would be nervous to try it because I don't have the best balance. It must take a lot of skill to be able to compete in this race!
