discrimination towards black people. She was an activist in the Civil Rights movement and
marched alongside Martin Luther King Jr to fight for black rights.
When Josephine was a child in St. Louis, Missouri, she would put on dancing and singing
shows for the neighborhood children and parents. In the early years of her career she traveled
around the world performing. When Josephine performed the other performers would call her a
scene stealer. As she went around the world, she realized that many black people were being
treated unfairly. She decided to try and help.
Baker wanted all Nationalities to be able to live in peace and be together. She helped Martin
Luther King Jr because she believed in nonviolent protests. When Josephine was done
performing, she worked for the French Resistance in World War Two, smuggling secret
messages. She then was awarded two of France's highest military honors. She spread her beliefs
around the world by performing.

their dreams and never give up. After her work career, Baker adopted children from all over the
world and called them the “rainbow tribe”. Her and her husband, Jo Bouillon raised a large family.
